CEU Course Description

Sensory-based interventions are a common modality in pediatric occupational therapy. This is mostly because of how often sensory concerns co-occur with developmental delays and neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, and intellectual disabilities. As a result, much of the evidence surrounding sensory integration is focused on children and adolescents. However, therapists know that sensory factors can impact the well-being of patients of any age and with any condition. It is expected the coming years will bring about a growing base of literature on sensory integration as it pertains to other age groups and populations. As this and any other research emerges, it is best practice for therapists to use it as a guide for the work they do. This will allow OT providers to offer more holistic interventions for individuals across the lifespan. This course will offer an overview of what sensory integration looks like from an occupational therapy lens when provided to various age groups and in various contexts.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Identify the intention of OT goals that guide sensory-based treatment.
  2. Define OT’s role in treatment focused on sensory regulation.
  3. Recall sensory-based interventions with a strong evidence base for each population.
